4-Star CB Elijah Hicks Flips Commitment From Notre Dame To Cal

Four-star cornerback Elijah Hicks flipped his commitment from the Notre Dame Fighting Irish to the Cal Golden Bears, who now have 15 total commits in the 2017 recruiting class. 


In mid-October, 4-star recruit Elijah Hicks chose to commit to Notre Dame. Almost three months later, he’s had a change of heart.

The No. 25 cornerback and No. 261 overall player in the country has flipped his commitment from the Fighting Irish to Cal, as first reported by 247Sports. Hicks, who’s from La Mirada, California, gives the Golden Bears 15 total commits in the 2017 recruiting class. Cal sits at No. 49 in the class rankings.

The Notre Dame staff reportedly did not care for Hicks’ visits to Michigan and Cal, and it was believed he was not fully committed to the Irish. While his scholarship offer was not pulled by the Notre Dame staff, the fact remains that Brian Kelly’s program is now down to 15 total commits in the cycle. The Irish dropped to No. 13 in the class rankings.

The surprising nature of his flip comes in the fact the Golden Bears do not currently have a head coach. They fired Sonny Dykes on Sunday after four seasons in Berkley. However, an official visit to Cal right before the recruiting dead period hit likely had a big impact, as Hicks will sign as an early enrollee and head to campus to begin classes.

There are a few names circulating for the Golden Bears’ head coaching job, including current offensive coordinator Jake Spavital and former Oregon head coach Chip Kelly. Whoever takes the job will be getting a 5-foot-10, 170-pound cover corner with excellent anticipation and ball skills. He’s also a threat as both a kick and punt returner.
