Polarizing Duke standout Grayson Allen appeared to intentionally shove Florida State assistant coach Dennis Gates on Tuesday night, but Gates believes the collision should be viewed differently.

Grayson Allen receives plenty of criticism for his antics, and most of it is justified. The backlash from the most recent controversy might be misplaced, though.

FSU assistant coach Dennis Gates released a statement Wednesday through Twitter telling people to back off Allen following a collision between the two during the Seminoles’ 88-72 home win over Duke on Tuesday night.

Allen chased after a loose ball toward the Florida State bench with roughly six minutes remaining in the game and Duke trailing by 14. As Allen fell into Gates, it appeared Allen pushed him intentionally. But Gates says the situation is being misconstrued.

“I clearly need to do a better job of moving out of the way like my coworkers …. I misread Grayson Allen’s speed the same way all of your are misreading the clip,” Gates wrote on Twitter.

Gates shouldn’t blame the public for jumping to conclusions, though, as Allen seemingly cannot go one game without stirring up some sort of controversy. Allen appeared to intentionally try to trip Boston College’s Connar Tava during Duke’s win on Saturday, but the ACC said there wasn’t enough evidence to hand down discipline.

The conference also decided against further punishment after Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski suspended Allen indefinitely and stripped him of his captaincy following an intentional trip of Elon’s Steven Santa Ana on Dec. 21. The suspension lasted only one game, however, despite that being the third clear tripping incident involving Allen in less than a year.

Allen tripped Louisville’s Ray Spalding on Feb. 8, then did the same to Florida State’s Xavier Rathan-Mays on Feb. 25. Neither Krzyzewksi nor the ACC took action against Allen after either of those incidents.
