Three-star defensive tackle James Lynch decommitted from USC on Saturday, leaving the Trojans with 14 total commits in their 2017 recruiting class.

Clay Helton’s Trojans had a ton of success in 2016, going 9-3 in his first full season as head coach.

But on Saturday, he and his staff took a hit on the recruiting trail when 3-star prospect James Lynch decommitted from USC.

Lynch, from Round Rock, Texas, is ranked as the No. 47 defensive tackle in the nation and No. 6 at that position in the Lone Star State.

He released a brief statement announcing his intention to back off his pledge to the Trojans.

“I would like to announce my decommitment from USC. I want to thank all the coaches at USC for the opportunity to be a part of that program.”

With the loss of Lynch, USC now sits at No. 18 in the 2017 recruiting class rankings, tied with Michigan State. The Trojans have 14 total commits, with 5-star running back Stephen Carr being their highest-rated commit.

As for Lynch, it appears as though he may be in line to re-commit to TCU. After he originally pledged to the Horned Frogs on May 25, Lynch decommitted on Aug. 18 and then committed to USC two days later.

Gary Patterson’s team started the day at No. 47 in the class rankings with nine total commits but moved up to No. 45 after adding 3-star cornerback Noah Daniels. Adding Lynch would move TCU up to No. 39 in the rankings.

Lynch holds additional offers from Colorado, Kansas State, Texas Tech and others.
