Four-star safety Jaylen Kelly-Powell committed to Michigan on Tuesday morning, giving the Wolverines 19 total commits.

Jim Harbaugh has done a great job pulling recruits from across the country, getting them to Ann Arbor. He’s also managed to keep the local talent close to home.

On Tuesday morning, he did just that when 4-star prospect Jaylen Kelly-Powell, a Detroit native, committed to Michigan with a commitment video. Harbaugh and his staff now have 19 total commits and are ranked at No. 7 in the 2017 recruiting class rankings with 3,045 recruiting points.

Ranked as the No. 23 safety and No. 269 overall player in the 2017 recruiting cycle, Kelly-Powell chose the Wolverines over the likes of Nebraska, Ohio State, Oregon, UCLA, Virginia Tech and Wisconsin.

At 6-foot, 180 lbs Kelly-Powell could benefit from adding on a few pounds, but he’ll fit right into what Harbaugh wants to do on the defensive side of the ball. He’s highly aggressive and isn’t vulnerable when playing man coverage, which shows in his versatility and ability to play cornerback as well as safety. Kelly-Powell is more of a solid, fundamentally sound wrap-up tackler, though he can deliver big hits when the opportunity presents itself.

Michigan is far from done on the recruiting trail. The Wolverines are still pursuing Kelly-Powell’s cousin, Ambry Thomas, a 4-star recruit. Thomas, the No. 5 cornerback and No. 58 overall player in the country, is heavily considering Michigan while also holding additional offers from Arizona, Florida, Michigan State, Ohio State, Pitt, USC and others.

While the Gators have made large strides in Thomas’ recruitment, the general sense is he’ll end up in Ann Arbor on the same team and in the same secondary as his cousin.
