Report: Kendal Briles Strong Candidate For FAU Offensive Coordinator Position

Baylor offensive coordinator Kendal Briles has been in talks with new FAU head coach Lane Kiffin about taking the same position with the Owls.

Lane Kiffin is the middle of performing two jobs: making sure his offensive at Alabama is ready for the College Football Playoff, and putting together a staff for his new role as the head coach at FAU.

Per, Kiffin has been having “productive conversations” with a familiar name for the open offensive coordinator position for the Owls: Baylor’s Kendal Briles.

Briles has served as the Bears offensive coordinator the past two seasons, guiding a unit that led the nation in points (48.1 ppg) and total yards (616.2 ypg) in 2015 and was fifth in the nation in total offense this past season, averaging 523.3 yards per game.

The move might make sense for the 34-year-old Briles, who started as an assistant in Waco in 2008 after his father, Art, became the Bears’ head coach. After the dismissal of his father as head coach this past summer, Briles might be looking for a fresh start.

Briles runs a high-tempo, no-huddle offense that is similar to what Kiffin will likely bring to the FAU program. Kiffin has revamped the Alabama offense with a more up-tempo style that also features a power running game. Baylor finished No. 2 in rushing offense in 2015, averaging 326.69 yards per game, while slipping a bit this season by racking up 250.25 yards on the ground per game.

For his efforts in 2015, Briles was a finalist for the Broyles Award, which is given to the nation’s top college assistant coach following each season.
