3-Star DT Matthew Butler Commits To Tennessee Volunteers

Three-star defensive tackle Matthew Butler committed to Tennessee on Wednesday, giving the Volunteers 26 total commits in the 2017 recruiting class.

The nation’s No. 34-ranked defensive tackle is headed to Knoxville.

Three-star prospect Matthew Butler committed to Tennessee on Wednesday afternoon. The Garner, North Carolina native is also ranked as the No. 1 defensive tackle in the state, and he chose the Volunteers over Duke, NC State, South Carolina and Texas A&M.

With the addition of Butler, Tennessee still sits at No. 9 in the 2017 recruiting class rankings, but the Vols did add 107 recruiting points with his decision. That brings their total to 3,216 points.

At 6-foot-4, 265 lbs Butler is a natrual run stopper. He’s played all along the defensive line at different techniques, and that speaks to his athleticism in the trenches. There are often times when Butler’s pad level is too upright, but the motor is there. He gives 100 percent on every play, and it can be seen in his ability to pursue the ball and never give up on a play.

Butler plays the position intelligently and combines preparaton with his overall physical abilities to make an impact on the defensive line, which will help him adjust at the collegiate level.

He’s the fifth recruit to commit to the Vols this month. Tennessee also added 5-star offensive tackle Trey Smith, 3-star quarterback Will McBride, 3-star inside linebacker Shanon Reid and 3-star defensive end Deandre Johnson.
