The newest edition of the college basketball AP Top 25 was released Monday. Here are some instant takeaways from the Week 2 poll.

Immediate changes from the preseason AP Top 25 are inevitable with made-for-TV matchups highlighting the early schedule, guaranteeing ranked teams are going to lose. Defeats at the hands of highly ranked foes are understandable.

However, Connecticut’s home loss to Wagner is inexcusable. The Huskies went from No. 18 in the poll to out of it completely following that 67-58 defeat on Friday. That marked the most significant drop, although there were other teams that fell despite victories.

Maryland was ranked No. 25 in the preseason poll, but an unimpressive 62-56 home win over American University caused it to fall out. Xavier fell from No. 7 to No. 11 following an 84-81 win over Lehigh.

Here’s a look at some other takeaways from the newest edition of AP Top 25.

Garden Variety

The Armed Forces Classic provided two thrillers on Friday to tip off the college basketball season. Arizona edged Michigan State, 65-63, on a layup that capped a frantic final 10 seconds, and Indiana knocked off Kansas with a wild 103-99 overtime victory.

The schedule doesn’t get any easier for the Spartans and Jayhawks, who both now make the long trip from Hawaii to New York with only a brief stop at home.

Michigan State, which fell one spot to No. 13, will take on No. 2 Kentucky before the Jayhawks – who are down for spots to No. 7 – take on No. 1 Duke in the annual Champions Classic on Tuesday night at Madison Square Garden. Both games will be a showcase of freshman standouts.

Michigan State’s Miles Bridges provided two of the opening weekend’s biggest highlights with soaring dunks against Arizona, and Kentucky’s De’Aaron Fox totaled 33 points and 15 assists in the Wildcats’ wins over Stephen F. Austin and Canisius.

Josh Jackson leads Kansas against a Blue Devils team featuring freshman guard Frank Jackson, who had 39 points while shooting 52 percent from the floor in victories over Marist and Grand Canyon.

Movin’ On Up

The top 10 had some big changes after just three days of basketball. Third-ranked Villanova, No. 4 Oregon and No. 5 North Carolina all moved up one spot in this week’s poll, while No. 6 Indiana jumped five positions following its win over Kansas.

The next-biggest jump was Iowa State’s move from No. 24 to No. 20 following a 113-71 win over Savannah State. Louisville (No. 12), Syracuse (No. 18) and West Virginia (No. 19) had one-spot jumps, while No. 21 Rhode Island moved up two places.

Cincinnati and California are the only two new additions to the poll, debuting at Nos. 24 and 25, respectively.

Looking Ahead

Ranked teams face each other plenty this week, and there are also some games that could trip up teams in the AP Top 25.

  • No. 3 Villanova at No. 15 Purdue (Monday)
  • No. 1 Duke vs. No. 7 Kansas (Tuesday)
  • No. 2 Kentucky vs. No. 13 Michigan State (Tuesday)
  • No. 9 Wisconsin at No. 22 Creighton (Tuesday)
  • No. 21 Rhode Island vs. No. 24 Cincinnati (Saturday)

Potential upset matchups include San Diego State visiting No. 14 Gonzaga on Monday and No. 4 Oregon at Baylor on Tuesday.

One of the week’s more intriguing games is No. 17 St. Mary’s playing at Dayton, which was only seven points behind California for the No. 25 ranking in this week’s poll.
