New Orleans Bowl prediction roundtable with the Campus Insiders staff. Breaking down what will happen between Southern Miss and UL-Lafayette.
Southern Miss is taking the win here, folks. Nick Mullens has put together a solid campaign this year, and he’s going to lead the Golden Eagles to the victory over Louisiana-Lafayette. Anthony Jennings is going to get picked off a couple times, while Mullens will be spot on. Southern Miss wins by two possessions.
Mark Hudspeth and the Ragin’ Cajuns know the Superdome very well. Meanwhile, Jay Hopson’s squad underachieved this past fall, as turnovers were an issue for a veteran roster that needed to win on the final weekend of the regular season to even advance to the postseason. Louisiana-Lafayette had a tough middle portion of the season, but it won its final three Sun Belt games. The defense is strong, but LSU transfer QB Anthony Jennings has not delivered the goods on offense. Meanwhile, Southern Miss star QB Nick Mullens and his offense average 472 yards per game, but the defense is very giving. Mullens should easily outplay Jennings, but keep an eye on RB Elijah McGuire. I think he’s the difference for Hudspeth’s squad in a close win.
Considering this game is indoors, I expect UL-Lafayette head coach Mark Hudspeth to be wearing a shirt two sizes too small to show off all the time he has spent in the weight room over the past 48 years of his life. The guy makes the old American Gladiators look puny.
Too bad for Hudspeth that his team will be run over by Southern Miss. Golden Eagles win by 17.
