Florida Gators safety Nick Washington stoked the flames of the “DBU” fire on Monday ahead of the LSU game.

You had to expect the “DBU” talk was coming with Florida-LSU week finally upon us. The game was originally scheduled for Oct. 8, but was postponed due to Hurricane Matthew and eventually rescheduled for Nov. 19.

The Gators and Tigers have both been vocal, on social media and with the press, regarding who is the rightful owner of the moniker “Defensive Back University.” Other programs (see: FSU, Texas) have joined in on the trash talk, but Florida and LSU have been the main promulgators. Even recruits have gotten in on the action.

On Monday, while previewing the upcoming showdown with the Tigers, Florida defensive back Nick Washington added some fuel to the fire.

“We’re the real DBU,” Washington stated.

Washington will help fill the void left by senior safety Marcus Maye, who suffered a season-ending injury against South Carolina.

During the offseason, Maye said that “there’s no question” Florida is DBU.

If the Gators are going to walk out of Baton Rouge as owners of the title and, more importantly, with a win, they’re going to have to do it without Maye and, most likely, eight other starters. That’s no easy task with one of the nation’s hottest teams waiting in one of the nation’s toughest, if not the toughest, venues.
