Oklahoma vs. West Virginia prediction roundtable with the Campus Insiders staff. Breaking down what will happen during Saturday’s Big 12 game between the Sooners and Mountaineers.
It’s kind of crazy to think Oklahoma has a chance to reach the College Football Playoff with two losses, but they came pretty early – and the Houston defeat looks much better now after it beat Louisville. Factor that the Sooners have recovered nicely and the chaos atop the CFP rankings, they have a legit shot when every Big 12 team was left for dead awhile ago. Oklahoma gets another win to add to the resume, beating West Virginia by two touchdowns.
Skyler Howard has had a great season. But Baker Mayfield has been better. And Mayfield is the reason why West Virginia is going to lose this game. Mayfield will find Dede Westbrook for a couple of touchdowns. Joe Mixon will tote the rock for 100-plus yards and a touchdown. And Samaje Perine will add some flavor to the damage Mixon does. The Sooners hang 40-plus on the Mountaineers and win this game.
This was already a big game for the Sooners, but the Louisville loss on Thursday night makes this even bigger. If OU can notch wins over West Virginia and Oklahoma State, it can finish the season 10-2 and as Big 12 champions with a 9-0 mark in conference play. Another Washington loss would really bolster the Sooners’ CFP bid.
Look for Mountaineers defensive coordinator Tony Gibson to once again have a very good defensive game plan in place for a high-powered offense. But in addition to Baker Mayfield, OU’s rushing combo of Samaje Perine and Joe Mixon as well as the electrifying Dede Westbrook allow OU to pull away in the fourth quarter and wear out a game WVU squad in an exciting Big 12 matchup.
This week, Mike Stoops said that a player, who had been sitting out with a concussion and decided to start preparing for the NFL Draft, quit on his team. Just zip it, Mike.
Oklahoma beats West Virginia.
