Ole Miss vs. Arkansas prediction and game preview. Projecting who wins the matchup between the Rebels and Razorbacks.

Ole Miss vs. Arkansas Game Preview

When: Saturday, October 15 – 7:00 p.m. ET
Where: Razorback Stadium, Fayetteville, AR
TV Broadcast: ESPN

Ole Miss is coming off a bye week after a tough opening stretch to the season in which the Rebels went 3-2, blowing big leads to FSU and Alabama. Quarterback Chad Kelly has been terrific, completing 66% of his passes for 1,596 yards and 13 touchdowns and four interceptions. Wide receiver Evan Engram has been Kelly’s favorite target, catching 30 passes for 479 yards and four touchdowns.

Arkansas took it on the chin this past Saturday in a 49-30 loss to Alabama that wasn’t as close as the score indicates. Quarterback Austin Allen threw three picks to go with his 400 yards passing and three touchdowns. Meanwhile the running game was nonexistent, rushing for only 73 yards on the ground.

What To Know About Ole Miss

Kelly has definitely been what everyone was expecting of him this season, leading an Ole Miss offense that scores 41.6 points per game while averaging 319 passing yards per game. The Rebels rely heavily on his arm, as their rushing attack ranks 83rd in the nation with just 157 yards per game. Engram has been a stud, but is not Kelly’s only target; Damore’ea Stringfellow has been solid as well, catching 20 passes for 305 yards and two touchdowns.

The defense has had its ups and downs, being extremely impressive at times while also giving up big leads in the two losses. Defensive end Marquis Haynes and linebacker DeMarquis Gates will look to put pressure on Allen while also focusing on preventing running back Rawleigh Williams III from getting going on the ground. Gates missed the Memphis game after being suspended by coaches for a violation of team rules.

What to Know About Arkansas

The running game must be better for the Razorbacks to have a shot in this game. Sure, a lot of teams are going to struggle to run the ball against Alabama, but that’s no excuse. Taking pressure off of Allen, who threw 48 times in the loss this past Saturday, and keeping the linebackers honest will help Arkansas move the ball. Mississippi allows just over 215 rushing yards per game (No. 105 nationally), so the Hogs ground game should be able to get back on track.

Stopping Kelly and the Rebels offense is not an easy task, either. Linebacker Brooks Ellis will have to watch out for Kelly breaking contain and picking up key first downs with his legs.

Advantages

Offense: Ole Miss. Kelly is on his way to All-SEC honors this season.

Defense: Ole Miss. Responded after struggling at the first of the season with big efforts against Georgia and Memphis.

Special Teams: Ole Miss. Kicker Gary Wunderlich is perfect on extra points and 7-of-8 on field goal attempts.

Coaching: Arkansas. Bret Bielema is a good coach whose name should be considered for the LSU job.

Intangibles: Arkansas. Coming off a tough defeat, the Razorbacks will use the home-field advantage to come out with some fire.

Matchup To Watch

Evan Engram vs. Arkansas secondary

Engram is a big guy (6’3, 227 lbs.) to stop at tight end. After holding Alabama’s O.J. Howard to one catch, can the Arkansas defense do it against a guy who is an even bigger part of the opponent’s offense?

Ole Miss vs. Arkansas Betting Odds

Spread: Ole Miss -7.5
Over/Under: No over/under as of post

Ole Miss vs. Arkansas Prediction

The Rebels will be well-rested after a bye week while the Razorbacks were beat up for sixty minutes in the loss to Alabama. Don’t expect Bielema to make any excuses though, as he will have his team ready to play. It will be a shootout between Chad Kelly and Austin Allen, but the Ole Miss defense will be able to get a few key stops to secure a road victory. Rebels win in a close one.

Ole Miss vs. Arkansas Score Prediction: Ole Miss 38, Arkansas 30
