The Texas Longhorns fired head coach Charlie Strong on Saturday morning, then lured Tom Herman from Houston to replace Strong with a five-year contract.

Money certainly wasn’t an issue for Texas in its negotiations with Tom Herman.

Reports out of Austin state that Herman and the Longhorns have agreed to a five-year contact worth more than $5 million per year with clauses that could increase the total value of the deal. Kirk Bohls of the Austin American-Statesman reported the early contract details on Saturday.

The contract signals a significant raise for Herman, who leaves Houston after going 22-4 in two seasons, including signature victories over Florida State in last year’s Peach Bowl, Oklahoma and Louisville. Herman received a raise to $3 million annually last season, and the Cougars reportedly offered a seven-figure raise recently in order to entice Herman to stay.

Herman ultimately decided to return to Texas, where he served as a graduate assistant in 1999 and 2000 under former coach Mack Brown, who resigned following the 2013 season after 16 years with the program, which included winning the 2005 national championship.

Charlie Strong replaced Brown after a successful four-year run with Louisville, but he was fired Saturday morning after going 16-21 in three seasons, marking the worst winning percentage in Texas history. Strong released a statement regarding his firing shortly after the news leaked.

Herman will maintain his recruiting base in the state, but his attention will first turn to pitching current players to stay, specifically running back D’Onta Foreman. Foreman, who joined Ricky Williams as the only Longhorns to rush for 2,000 yards, said he plans to make a decision quickly about whether to return to Texas or declare for the NFL draft. He said Strong leaving would be a factor in his decision.
