Three-star wide receiver Shawn Smith decommitted from the South Carolina Gamecocks on Tuesday.
Will Muschamp hasn’t had the easiest transition in his first season as South Carolina’s head coach. After opening with a win, the Gamecocks have dropped to 2-3, losing three of their last four games.
Muschamp’s troubles have always come on the offensive side of the ball, and that’s no different now. The Gamecocks are ranked No. 124 in total offense. If that’s going to improve, Muschamp will need to stockpile recruits on that side of the ball. But, on Tuesday, it was the exact opposite for South Carolina when three-star wide receiver Shawn Smith decommitted.
Smith’s decision leaves the Gamecocks with 23 total commits.
The Brunswick, Georgia native released a statement regarding his decision.
“Cocky Nation, after attending the game this weekend and talking to the South Carolina coaches, I’ve decided that it’s best for me to decommit from the University of South Carolina. The [South] Carolina coaching staff has accepted several other wide receivers’ commitments, and I feel I’m no longer a top priority in their future plans. I will reopen my recruitment process and look forward to exploring other college options that will best fit my future academically and athletically. [I have] much love for Gamecock nation. Thank you and God bless.”
South Carolina currently has commitments from 3-star Shi Smith and 4-star receiver OrTre Smith, who unveiled his commitment to the Gamecocks in an exclusive video with Campus Insiders.
Smith, the No. 11-ranked wide receiver in the state of Georgia and No. 99 receiver in the nation, holds other offers from Auburn, Florida, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Illinois, Miami and West Virginia.
He’s set to take an official visit to Louisville on Nov. 26 when the Cardinals host the Kentucky Wildcats. Currently, it seems as though the home-state Bulldogs are the favorite to land him at the moment.
