5-Star QB Tate Martell On Ohio State Recruiting: Getting Baron Browning ‘Was Huge’

Five-star quarterback Tate Martell spoke with Campus Insiders about Ohio State’s 2017 recruiting class and how the future Buckeyes will do in Columbus.

If Tate Martell had it his way, 5-star offensive tackle Trey Smith would be donning scarlet and gray instead of Tennessee orange. Smith chose the Vols over the Buckeyes on Tuesday afternoon — hours after Martell spoke with Campus Insiders and exclaimed how much he’d love to have Smith block for him at Ohio State.

Even without Smith, though, the Buckeyes are bordering on one of the greatest recruiting classes ever. Urban Meyer’ staff currently holds the No. 3 recruiting class in the country with 16 total commits. Six of those commits are 5-star prospects. If Ohio State held on to all six, it would sign the most 5-star prospects since Alabama’s seven in the 2014 cycle.

That number could soon be growing, too. Safety Jeffrey Okudah, running back Cam Akers and defensive tackle Marvin Wilson are all considering the Buckeyes. Landing nine 5-star recruits would be the most since Florida and USC tied with 10 5-star signees in the 2007 class.

Okudah, Akers and Wilson still have some time before they announce their decisions, and we still have the entire recruiting dead period to get through.

Martell, however, can rest somewhat easier knowing he helped reel in Ohio State’s most recent 5-star commit, Baron Browning. When he spoke with Campus Insiders, Martell explained how impactful landing the nation’s No. 2 outside linebacker was for the Buckeyes.

“I talk to Baron quite a bit, and he’s one of the guys I connected with when I was at The Opening,” Martell said. “It was huge getting a big-time player like that.”

With the addition of Browning, Ohio State now has commitments from eight of the top 50 players in the 2017 class. Two of those commits are 5-star wide receiver Trevon Grimes and 4-star wide receiver Tyjon Lindsey, who committed together in a joint video in August.

Grimes is recovering from a torn ACL but should be ready for the 2017 season. When he is running routes smoothly again, the Buckeyes will have a slew of dynamic weapons to target in the passing game.

Both Grimes and Lindsey will join a formidable crew of pass catchers that includes former 4-star receivers Austin Mack and Binjimen Victor in addition to former 4-star tight ends Kierre Hawkins, Luke Farrell and Jake Hausmann.

Martell is extremely excited to sling the rock to so many explosive playmakers and believes they can accomplish big things together.

“It’s gonna’ be fun throwing to all those guys. They’re all big-time playmakers. They always know what they’re doing. They’re all smart when it comes to running routes,” Martell said. “I’ve thrown routes will all the guys before, so I know that I’ll be surrounded by guys who can turn 5-yard throws into 85-yard touchdowns. It’s gonna be fun doing that.”

Ohio State is quickly becoming “5-Star U.” And it could pay off immensely down the road.
