Toledo vs. Akron prediction and game preview. The Rockets look to bounce back from their first MAC loss when they face the Zips on Wednesday night.

Toledo vs. Akron Game Preview

When: Wednesday, Nov. 2 – 7:30 p.m. ET
Where: InfoCision Stadium, Akron, Ohio.
TV Broadcast: ESPN2

It looked like star quarterback Logan Woodside would carry Toledo into its showdown with Western Michigan on Nov. 25 unbeaten in MAC play. He did his part Saturday against Ohio, but the Rockets’ defense faltered in a surprising 31-26 defeat that is the team’s first in conference action. If the Broncos continue to win, Toledo won’t be able to slip up again if it wants any shot of appearing in the MAC title game.

It hopes things get a little more smoothly Wednesday despite having only three days between games. And although Toledo’s loss was a bit of a shock, Akron’s defeat at Buffalo was even more surprising. The Zips fell 41-20 and allowed at least 500 yards of offense for the second time in three weeks.

What To Know About Toledo

Woodside showed again why he’s one of the top quarterbacks in the nation, throwing for 438 yards and three touchdowns against Ohio. His 31 touchdowns are the most in the country, and his passer rating in third behind Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield and Washington’s Jake Browning while leading the MAC’s top offense.

He’s not responsible for stopping the opposition’s attack, though. The Rockets allowed 269 yards on the ground to the Bobcats and never led in a home loss that few saw coming. Each of Ohio’s four touchdowns were from at least 25 yards out.

What To Know About Akron

Toledo might be catching Akron at the right time. The Zips finished with just 306 yards of offense against Buffalo and had fewer than 300 in two of their previous three games. Thomas Woodson had a rough game Saturday, going 18 of 42 with a touchdown and an interception while being sacked three times.

Defensively, the Zips allowed at least 500 yards for the fifth time this season. Most of those yards have come on the ground as opponents try to expose the MAC’s 11th-ranked rush defense. Toledo might try to do so as well and give more carries than usual to Kareem Hunt.

Advantages

Offense: Toledo – Woodside and Hunt have helped the Rockets lead the conference in yards per game.

Defense: Even – Toledo would’ve had the easy edge here until recently, but both teams are facing issues heading into this contest.

Special Teams: Akron – JoJo Natson has returned two punts for touchdowns.

Coaching: Even – Both Jason Candle and Terry Bowden need to get their players to bounce back from surprising losses.

Intangibles: Even – This will be the first meeting in three years.

Matchup To Watch

Hunt vs. Akron’s run defense

All eyes are usually on Woodside when it comes to Toledo’s offense, but Hunt should see plenty of work in this one. He’s the MAC’s third-leading rusher averaging 98.8 yards per game.

Betting Odds

Spread: Toledo -8
Over/Under: No line

Toledo vs. Akron Prediction

Woodside takes a backseat to Hunt, who rushes for three touchdowns as Toledo hands Akron a second straight defeat and keeps its hopes alive for a berth in the MAC title game.

Toledo vs. Akron final score prediction: Toledo 48, Akron 35
