Five-star quarterback Trevor Lawrence is in Athens to watch Georgia take on hated-rival Auburn.
The nation’s No. 1 quarterback and No. 1 overall player for the 2018 recruiting class is in Athens today to check out the home-state Georgia Bulldogs take on the Auburn Tigers in the Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry.
Understanding that it’s still early in the recruiting process for the junior and things could easily change, the Bulldogs are one of the two favorites to land the elite quarterback. Lawrence is from nearby Cartersville, Georgia, approximately two hours to the northwester of Athens.
“Just it [UGA] is in-state, they want me and they need me, they feel like I can help build the 2018 class around me, hopefully, because they are loading up in 2017,” Lawrence said during the summer regarding what first-year head coach Kirby Smart is pitching to him. “They are hoping if they get me that will help more in the 2018 class.”
The other team firmly in the hunt is Clemson. For Lawrence, the Tigers realistically provide a clearer path to the starting quarterback position, given Georgia’s signing of five-star Jacob Eason in 2015, who is now starting for the Bulldogs, and the commitment of five-star Jake Fromm, who plans to early enroll in 2017.
This marks the third visit Lawrence has taken this season. He checked out LSU for the Tigers’ Nov. 5 game against Alabama, and prior to that took a trip to Clemson for its game against Louisville on Oct. 5.
