Troy vs. Georgia Southern Game Preview

When: Saturday, December 3 – 12:00 p.m. ET
Where: Paulson Stadium, Statesboro, GA
TV Broadcast: ESPN2

Troy improved to 9-2 with a 40-7 win over Texas State as quarterback Brandon Silvers threw for 218 yards and two touchdowns and the Trojans defense held the Bobcats to just 256 yards of offense.

Georgia Southern had a week off after dropping 30-24 to in-state rival Georgia State, dropping the Eagles to 4-7 including a four-game losing streak. The rushing attack of Southern is struggling this season, including gaining just 241 yards on the ground in the loss to Georgia State.

What To Know About Troy

The combination of Silvers and running back Jordan Chunn have led the way for the Trojans offense. Silvers has thrown for 2,727 yards and 21 touchdowns while Chunn has churned out 1,153 yards on the ground and reached pay dirt 11 times. Silvers loves to target both Emanuel Thompson and Deondre Douglas, who have combined for 11 receiving touchdowns.

The Trojans defense has been solid this season, allowing only 361.7 yards per game while being No. 11 in the nation in rushing defense by giving up a mere 115.09 yards on the ground. Shutting down the usually potent Eagles rushing attack will be priority number one.

What to Know About Georgia Southern

When Georgia Southern is successful, it has the ability to run the ball right at and through you even though you know it is coming. While the attack is a little down this season, gaining 224.73 yards per game, it still has the ability to wear defenses down. The problem has been finding the right quarterback to lead the offense, with Kevin Ellison, Favian Upshaw, and Seth Shuman all getting reps under center.

The defense has been middle of the road this season, allowing 401.4 yards and giving up 26.1 points per game. For the Eagles to have a chance, they must make the Trojans one dimensional.

Advantages

Offense: Troy. The Eagles have only one plan: run the ball. Troy can beat you both in the air and on the ground.

Coaching: Troy. Neal Brown is young and already has his hands on a winning program.

Intangibles: Troy. Win and an Arkansas State loss would give the Trojans the Sun Belt title.
