Tyreke Johnson recruiting update as of Monday, February 20. Johnson says four schools are standing out above the rest.
Now on the home stretch of his junior year, and with his final high school season just around the corner, 5-star athlete Tyreke Johnson‘s recruitment is hitting a new gear.
Johnson cracked the top 10 of the first CI 25 rankings, checking in as the No. 1 athlete and No. 9 overall player. His athleticism, versatility and maturity have garnered interest from nearly every major program in the country.
Coming off a visit to nearby Gainesville, Florida last week – Johnson is from Jacksonville, Florida – he walked away impressed.
“It was an amazing trip,” Johnson said of his time with the Gators. “It was a trip that opened my eyes a lot because I got to talk with the new [defensive backs] coach and he’s a very cool guy.”
Florida is firmly in the race to land Johnson, but the Gators do have some staunch competition.
While at The Opening Regional in Orlando, Florida over the weekend, Johnson weighed in on the current state of his recruitment.
UCLA, Georgia, Ohio State and Florida are the programs he said are standing out right now.
At this point in time, it feels as though the Gators hold a slight edge in his recruitment. However, Kirby Smart and Urban Meyer have proven to be two of the best in the nation and have a history of plucking elite recruits out of Florida.
The draw of the bright lights of Hollywood is also strong for Johnson.
“I can be a superstar out there [in Los Angeles],” he proclaimed.
All four teams, as well as any others who hope to sway the 6-foot-2, 185-pound athlete out of Trinity Christian Academy, have ample time to impress, as Johnson currently doesn’t plan to commit until late 2017.
