Utah vs. Arizona State prediction roundtable with the Campus Insiders staff. Breaking down what will happen during Thursday’s game between the Utes and Sun Devils.
Arizona State is not good. At all. Utah is, quite probably, the second-best team in the Pac-12. Troy Williams will have a field day picking apart the nation’s worst pass defense (ASU gives up 397.6 yards passing, which is 62.2 yards worse than the nation’s No. 127-ranked passing defense of Rice). Utah wins back-to-back games against ASU for the first time since the 1960s in relatively easy fashion.
Manny Wilkins is banged up, and we’re not sure if he’s going to go in this one. But, either way, this is Utah’s game to lose. Joe Williams has been toting the rock like a man possessed, and he’s going to fly past the century mark on the ground while breaking into the end zone twice. Kalen Ballage will have a great game, but the Utes will take the win by one possession.
True freshman quarterback Dillon Sterling-Cole played in place of the injured Manny Wilkins for the Sun Devils last week against Oregon, and he tossed three interceptions. It is unknown if Wilkins will be able to go against the Utes, but I don’t think it would change the outcome. Utah will get big plays from quarterback Troy Williams, while running back Joe Williams will be a workhorse once again. The Utes are No. 33 in the FBS in total defense, while Arizona State is No. 124. Give me a Kyle Whittingham defense any day of the week.
Kyle Whittingham’s wife, Jamie, needs to bring back her blog “Married To The Coach.” I wish more coaches’ wives would do this, because it shows you that these men are human and not living at the office at all hours of the day and night. I got to follow the Whittinghams’ trips to New York City, specifically the reservoir at St. George, Utah where they did some boating and, sadly, the veterinarian to put down their beloved dog Max. I feel like I know them.
