Wake Forest’s Dave Clawson has long-term stability in Winston-Salem. The Demon Deacons gave their head coach an eight-year contract extension.

Wake Forest athletic director Ron Wellman announced on Tuesday that head football coach Dave Clawson has received a contract extension through the 2024 season.

This past year, Clawson led the Demon Deacons to a 7-6 record and a 34-26 win over Temple in the Military Bowl.

“I am very pleased that Dave has accepted our contract extension,” said Wellman. “The progress shown throughout the program, both on and off the field over the last three years, has been the type of progress we envisioned when Dave came on board. His energy, talent, integrity and ability to recruit, develop and motivate our student-athletes, have led to our success not only on the field but in the classroom. We have an exciting future with Dave leading our program.”

Clawson arrived in Winston-Salem prior to the 2014 season and led the Demon Deacons to their first bowl game in five years in 2016. The victory over the Owls was their first bowl win over a ranked team in school history.

“I am honored to be offered this long-term contract,” said Clawson. “I greatly appreciate the support that our president, Dr. Nathan Hatch, and athletic director Ron Wellman have given to our program, our staff and myself since arriving at Wake Forest three years ago. The future of Wake Forest football is bright and we plan to build on the success of our 2016 season.”

Wake Forest was the fourth-most improved team among Power Five schools this season, increasing its total by four from 2015. Only Colorado (+6), Georgia Tech (+6) and Washington (+5) had higher improved win totals.

While the Demon Deacons ended the regular season on a three-game losing streak and losers of five of their last six, it was still a nice season for Clawson because it ended not only with a postseason invite but also a win. And a bowl game for Wake Forest will always mean it’s been a good season.

After back-to-back 3-9 records, Clawson’s 7-6 2016 campaign gives him a mark of 13-24 in three years. But there’s no question that he has helped raise the talent level at Wake, which was very necessary in an ACC that has never been stronger.

Tom Crean Deserved Better From Indiana

Tom Crean rebuilt the Indiana program, then became a victim of his own success. The school's administration - and the Hoosiers' fan base - owed him more than an undeserved dismissal.
