Western Michigan vs. Eastern Michigan Game Preview
When: Saturday, Oct. 22 – 3:30 p.m. ET
Where: Waldo Stadium, Kalamazoo, Mich.
TV Broadcast: ESPN3
Western Michigan continues to dominate since its season-opening 22-21 win at Northwestern. It has won the last six games by an average of 31 points, with the smallest margin of victory in that stretch being 15 against Northern Illinois two weeks ago. The biggest disappointment of Western Michigan’s best start since 1941 came during Saturday’s 41-0 win over Akron when running back Davon Tucker fumbled, resulting in the Broncos’ first turnover of the season. They were the last team in the country without a giveaway.
P.J. Fleck’s team is now the 20th-ranked team in the nation and next will have to fend off upset-minded Eastern Michigan, which is going to need another big game from Brogan Roback. The redshirt junior has thrown seven touchdown passes and one interception over his last three games for the Eagles, who have won three straight on the road for the first time since 1967.
What To Know About Western Michigan
Western Michigan’s 6.62 yards per play ranks 20th in the nation, ahead of more well-known offenses like Baylor and Michigan, to name a couple. Zach Terrell and Corey Davis are one of the top quarterback-receiver duos in the country, and they hooked up for two more touchdowns in the win over Akron. But they’re not the only weapons. Jarvion Franklin finished with 281 yards and a touchdown on the ground, giving him three straight games of at least 132 yards to bring him up to second in the MAC in rushing.
The Broncos’ defense isn’t too shabby, either. It ranks second in the conference in fewest yards allowed per game and has given up fewer than 300 two of its the last three games. Keion Adams leads MAC and its tied for eighth in the country in tackles for loss with 11 and is tied for fourth in the conference with 5.5 sacks.
What To Know About Eastern Michigan
Adams and company will need to put some pressure on Roback, who threw for a career-high 347 yards and three touchdowns in last week’s 27-20 win over Ohio as Eastern Michigan improved to 5-2 for the first time since 1995. It marked his second three-touchdown game of the season, and the Eagles might need another given their lack of a running game lately.
Eastern Michigan has totaled 150 yards on the ground the last two games and have finished with fewer than 100 three times. Ian Eriksen is the team’s leading rusher averaging 61.1 yards per game.
