Four-star outside linebacker Willie Gay decommitted from the Ole Miss Rebels Monday morning.

The nation’s No. 6 outside linebacker and No. 88 overall player has officially reopened his recruitment.

Four-star recruit Willie Gay decommitted from Ole Miss on Monday morning, leaving the Rebels with 11 total commits in the 2017 cycle. Ole Miss’ class now ranks No. 46 following Gay’s decision.

The Starkville, Mississippi native released a statement regarding his decommitment.

“I would like to thank all the Ole Miss fans and [the] coaching staff for the love and support these past few months. But after talking with my mom and praying on it, I have decided to decommit from the University of Mississippi.”

Gay backed off his pledge to the Rebels a day after he wrapped up an official visit in Ann Arbor. The 4-star linebacker was on Michigan’s campus to watch the Wolverines’ 41-8 win over Big Ten foe Illinois.

His next official visit will come this weekend as he makes the trip down to Tallahassee for Florida State’s matchup with Clemson.

It’s difficult to imagine Gay leaving his home state, though. Even though he’s now decommitted from Ole Miss, the Mississippi State Bulldogs are still in the hunt. Dan Mullen and his staff will do everything they can to make sure they don’t lose out on a 4-star linebacker out of their own backyard. Gay will take an official visit to Mississippi State on Nov. 5 for the Bulldogs’ game against Texas A&M.

A week after he sees his hometown team, Gay will visit the Florida Gators when they host South Carolina.

Don’t rule out a possible return to Ole Miss’ class either. Gay visited Oxford three times from Sept. 17 to Oct. 1, and the Rebels certainly have a need for outside linebacker on their roster. He’ll spend his last official visit there on Nov. 26 when Ole Miss hosts Mississippi State.
