Three-star center Xavier Newman decommits from Texas Longhorns.

The losing streak is over. After three consecutive losses, Charlie Strong’s Longhorns managed to pick up a 27-6 win against Iowa State on Saturday. And yet, somehow, Strong’s team still lost, at least on the recruiting trail.

Three-star prospect Xavier Newman decommitted from Texas on Sunday night. The Longhorns dropped from No. 32 to No. 37 in the 2017 recruiting class rankings with seven total commits remaining.

Ranked as the No. 6 center in the country and hailing from DeSoto, Texas, Newman released a statement regarding his decision to back off his pledge.

“I would like to thank the University of Texas for everything they’ve done for me and their support, but after praying about it and talking with my family, I have decided to decommit from Texas. I would like to say thank you to Coach Strong, the coaching staff, and the fans.”

The decommitment comes a couple of days after Newman took an official visit to Colorado for the Buffaloes’ 40-16 win over Arizona State. Coincidentally, Colorado has now replaced Texas as the No. 32 recruiting class.

Mike MacIntyre’s team is now favored to land the 3-star center, though the 6-foot-3, 272-pound Newman does hold additional offers from Illinois, Iowa State, Mississippi State, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma , Texas A&M, Texas Tech and others.

He’s the No. 2-ranked center in the state of Texas for a reason. Newman has experience playing left tackle and can bring versatility to an offensive line, which is always important as a season progresses and injuries occur. He has the potential to be a quality pass blocker, but his real strength is his ability to push defensive linemen off the ball and create holes in the running game. If your pad level is too high, Newman will turn you into a pancake.
