Jim Phelan: Mount St Mary’s, 49 Seasons(1954-2003)
The legendary Hall of Fame coach Jim Phelan is on top of the longest tenured college basketball coaches in history list. For 49 consecutive seasons, Phelan led the Mount St. Mary’s men’s basketball program.
During his long and impressive tenure, Coach Phelan earned 830 career wins. The success of the team led Mount St Mary’s to become a Division I school.
Jim was recognized for his accomplishments with a Hall of Fame induction in 2008.
Phog Allen: Kansas, 49 Seasons(1905-1956, Excluding 2 Seasons During This Time)
Phog Phelan is known as the godfather of basketball coaching for his role as a sport pioneer. He is also one of the longest tenured college basketball coaches in history.
The protege of Dr. James Naismith coached college basketball for 49 seasons predominantly with Kansas. He earned 746 career wins and multiple championships with Kansas before retiring in 1956.
Jim Boeheim: Syracuse, 47 Seasons(1976-2023)
Jim Boeheim is currently third on the list of longest tenured college basketball coaches in history. Coach Boeheim spent 47 straight successful seasons at the University of Syracuse.
During his 5 decades of coaching, Jim won a national title and made five Final Four appearances. After retiring on 2023, Boeheim finished with the second-most wins in Division I history(1,116).
Mike Krzyzewski: Duke, 42 Seasons(1980-2022)

Tony Hinkle: Butler, 41 Seasons(1926-1942, 1945-1970)
Tony Hinkle is arguably the most diverse individual on our list of longest tenured college basketball coaches in history. Coach Hinkle didn’t just coach basketball, but multiple sports while working at Butler University.
Hinkle coached for a combined 41 seasons and earned 541 wins during his tenure. In honor of building Butler’s basketball program, the University named the fieldhouse after him in his honor.
Adolph Rupp: Kentucky, 41 Seasons(1930-1972)
