Five-star center Mitchell Robinson has announced his decommitment from Western Kentucky. However, he has already signed his national letter of intent with the Hilltoppers.

Five-star center Mitchell Robinson has announced his decommitment from Western Kentucky. The prized big man took to Twitter late Monday night to reveal his decision.

“After careful consideration, I have decided to DECOMMIT from the University of Western Kentucky and explore my options this only happens once.” The tweet was later deleted.

In a separate tweet afterward, Robinson said, “It’s my senior year and this only happens once in a life time I think fair if I can take my visit after all I did work for where I’m at now. [sic]”

The No. 6 overall prospect in the 2017 class, Robinson has already signed his national letter of intent with the Hilltoppers, as announced by the university last week. That makes his situation with new head coach Rick Stansbury’s program more complicated than an ordinary decommitment process.

Robinson must be granted a release from his NLI by Western Kentucky in order to explore his other options. Being the poster child for the future of Western Kentucky basketball, Robinson’s release from the Hilltoppers may not come as easily as he’s likely hoping. He is the crown jewel to Stansbury’s 2017 class.

Prior to his original commitment to WKU, Robinson was committed to Texas A&M, where Stansbury was an assistant coach. Robinson flipped his commitment after Stansbury accepted the head coaching job at WKU. Robinson’s godfather, Shammond Williams, is also an assistant coach for the Hilltoppers.
